Clear vulnerable areas, plan snow storage and coordinate sprinkler shutdown before winter storms limit access to the yard.
Make a route and storage plan
Walk the driveway and paths before snow hides their edges. Mark low fixtures, irrigation heads and obstacles where appropriate. Choose snow storage areas that keep entrances, drains and visibility clear. Discuss access needs and snow placement with anyone clearing the property so heavy piles are not deposited on vulnerable planting beds.
Remove what should not be buried
Collect branches, toys and debris from lawn areas and walking routes. Address thick leaf accumulations while conditions allow. Leave clear access to gates and shutoffs. A cleanup request should specify whether it includes beds, hauling and hard surfaces; those tasks are not automatically part of a lawn-only visit.
Check the irrigation shutdown status
Confirm that winterization is completed and note any items excluded from the appointment. A disconnected controller does not demonstrate that water has been removed from components. Follow the system-specific instructions for exposed assemblies, pumps and other equipment. If a freeze is approaching and shutdown is unresolved, contact an irrigation professional promptly.
Avoid unnecessary damage during the storm
Keep regular travel on cleared surfaces when possible. Choose deicing products and application amounts according to their labels and suitability for surrounding materials and plants. Inspect for ponding as snow melts. Save photographs of damage for spring assessment instead of undertaking heavy lawn work on frozen or waterlogged soil.
