Check runoff, infiltration, utilities and overflow before deciding whether a rain garden suits your Boise Bench yard.
Trace the water before choosing a location
Observe roof and paved-surface runoff during appropriate conditions and map where it currently travels. Identify neighboring property, foundations and existing drainage features. A rain garden collects and infiltrates runoff, but it is not suitable in every low spot. The Boise Bench name alone does not establish the soil or drainage conditions of a lot.
Assess suitability and the required design
Have infiltration, grading, groundwater and setback questions evaluated for the actual site. Locate utilities and confirm relevant local requirements before digging or changing drainage. Do not use a universal percentage of roof area or an online excavation depth as the completed design. Poor siting can create a water problem rather than solve one.
Select plants for both wet and dry conditions
Different parts of the planting may experience different moisture patterns. Choose regionally suitable plants for those conditions and their mature size. Include establishment care and a plan for invasive or unwanted growth. A rain garden still needs maintenance and may require supplemental water during establishment.
Plan overflow, access and inspection
A project should explain where excess water goes and how sediment, debris and plant growth will be managed. Keep access to inlets and outlets. Review performance after storms and address standing-water or erosion concerns. Compare a complete design and installation scope instead of assuming a guaranteed runoff-reduction percentage.
