Give each boulder a purpose
A focal point, bed accent and grade-related feature have different requirements. Mark the proposed location and view it from the house and nearby paths. Consider mature planting sizes so a carefully chosen feature does not disappear behind shrubs. A few deliberate placements may work better than filling every open area.
Select the actual material where possible
Color, shape and visible faces vary. Review photographs or inspect the stones before delivery and agree on how orientation will be chosen. Think about mowing clearance, sharp edges and walking routes. A display boulder should not be assumed to provide engineered slope support merely because it is heavy.
Plan handling and the site before delivery
Large stones require suitable equipment, access and stable placement. Locate utilities and private irrigation features before disturbance. Confirm how lawns, paving and other surfaces will be protected during transport. Do not improvise lifting or rolling heavy material through a yard without appropriate equipment and expertise.
Coordinate planting, drainage and upkeep
Include base preparation, final grade, surrounding plants and irrigation in the scope. Preserve access for weed control and debris removal. Ask whether delivery, placement, disposal and restoration are included in the quoted price. Review the feature after rain or irrigation for unintended ponding or displaced material.
